Mr. Scott Coyle, President

Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission

Post Office Box 338

Charles Town WV 25414

Dear Mr. Coyle:

At the direction of the Jefferson County Board of Education at its July 2, 2002 meeting, we are writing this letter to establish a relationship with the Planning Commission so that we can work together to provide quality schools in Jefferson County. Community schools require involvement from the community and we need to model working together. First, this letter serves to update information that the Jefferson County Public Schools previously sent to you on school space to serve proposed subdivisions. The Program Capacity numbers are the same as we have sent you before, with the addition of the ninth grade complex, at 600 seats.

Our projected enrollments for next year show available space at all elementary schools except T A Lowery and C W Shipley. The space changes at the elementary level are due to moving the 6th grades to the middle schools. There is no available space, in fact there is overcrowding, at all middle schools and the high school. These figures do not include  additional enrollment that we expect in the summer, so the space at elementary schools may not last.

To better assist the Jefferson County School Board in its long range planning, we would request that the Planning Commission provide us figures on how many additional lots and homes have been approved, beyond the current homes and where these homes are located. When conducting school planning we need to know where the growth is coming sothat we have space for thise children moving into the system as well as ensure space for our current enrollment. We also request that you keep us informed on the number of additional residential lots and homes as you approve them.

We need your help with this information, as we currently have no funding for any expansion. We are actively seeking other sources, but have no assurance of receiving enough to meet the need. The information on approved lots, that we request from you above, will help us make the case for additional funding.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Nichols, Superintendent Jefferson County Schools

Dr. Lori Stilley, President Jefferson County Board of Education
