SCHOOL SYSTEM LETTER CONCERNING LEAD & PESTICIDES AT SOUTH JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

June 5, 2001

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As many of you know, there were a number of questions raised by parents and staff regarding the water quality and other health concerns at South Jefferson Elementary School As a result of these questions, several things have been done that we believe answer many of the questions presented. We would like to use this opportunity to update you and to let you know of projects that should be completed this summer.

The following has occurred:

The Jefferson County Health Department, the Regional Office of the West Virginia Health Department, the West Virginia University Extension Service - Jefferson County Office, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and administrative staff from the Jefferson County Board of Education Office have been involved in the assessment process.

All water tests required by the West Virginia Health Department have continued on a regular basis and currently meet standards.

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture tested the soil for pesticides with no findings.

Reviews of aerial photos of the land taken prior to construction of the school indicated that the land was used as pasture. Research did not indicate that the land was used in a manner that would cause concern.

Bottled water was provided.

The water treatment plant has been upgraded as per recommendation by the West Virginia Department of Health and is currently in operation with the new treatment system.

The system is flushed daily at each point where consumption may occur.

Summer plans include:

An assessment of the transformer by Allegheny Power.

Pipes and fixtures replaced in classrooms where higher than normal lead levels have occurred in the past.

We want to assure you that currently water tests indicate that all levels meet approved standards. The activities planned for the summer are being completed only as a precaution and to assure that elevated lead levels do not occur in the future. Much has been learned by this process and, as a result, I believe that there will be better communication among the agencies.

All reports of tests administered this year are available in the Principal*s Office. Mrs. VanCamp will be glad to share those with you. Questions that cannot be answered at the school can be directed to Beverly Hughes, Associate Superintendent (728-9228), John Norman, Coordinator of Facilities and Maintenance (728-9215) or George Frame, Director of Support Services (728-9241).

Sincerely,

Beverly Hughes

Associate Superintendent
